For Such a Time as This: A Women of Hope Novel by Ginny Aiken is a historical rendition of the biblical story of Esther. Olivia is the oldest daughter of a hardworking family in Bountiful, OR, but Olivia feels like a burden with the downfall of the family farm She boldly finds a job as a nanny for the town's prestigious widowed banker, Eli Whitman. When rumors start to circulate, the banker and nanny get married for the sake of reputation. Time goes by and affections grow between Olivia and Eli, but sinister things are happening with the bank and the new railroad. Will Olivia have courage to approach her husband about the devastating letter from the bank to her parents who were asked to foreclose on their home before the new year?
This book showed the main character having strength and dignity in tough situations. Olivia is a well mannered young woman who took it upon herself to face great challenges. I really enjoyed how Olivia interacted with each person in the story. She was patient with the children, gracious to the proud cook and respectful to her husband. She longed for trust and deep intimacy, but was torn between the promises she made to her family and to her husband (not to interfere in his business). We can all learn a lesson to know we are placed in situations "for such a time as this."
